Pain From The Prophet

And a woman spoke, saying, "Tell us of Pain."
And he said:
Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding.
Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain.

And could you keep your heart in wonder at the daily miracles of your life, your pain would not seem less wondrous than your joy;
And you would accept the seasons of your heart, even as you have always accepted the seasons that pass over your fields.
And you would watch with serenity through the winters of your grief.

Much of your pain is self-chosen.
It is the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self.
Therefore trust the physician, and drink his remedy in silence and tranquillity:
For his hand, though heavy and hard, is guided by the tender hand of the Unseen, And the cup he brings, though it burn your lips, has been fashioned of the clay which the Potter has moistened with His own sacred tears.

이번에는 한 여인이 말하여 이르기를,
"저희에게 고통에 대하여 말씀해 주십시오."
그러자 그가 말하기를:
그대들의 고통이란 그대들의 오성(悟性)을 둘러싼 단단한 껍질이 깨어지는 것과 같을진대. 과일의 씨도 속까지 햇빛에 쐬려면 부서져야 하듯, 그대들도 그렇게 고통을 알아야 하리라.

그리고 그대들 마음이 그대들의 삶 속에 매일 일어나는 기적들에 늘 경이를 느낄 수 있다면, 그대의 고통 역시 그 기쁨에 못지않게 경이로우리라:
또한 그대들이 들판을 지나는 계절을 늘 받아들였던 것처럼, 그대들 마음의 계절도 기꺼이 받아들일 수 있으리라.
또한, 그대들은 슬픔의 겨울을 처음부터 끝까지 평온히 바라볼 수 있으리라.

그대들 고통의 대부분은 스스로 선택한 것.
그것은 그대들 마음속의 의사가 병든 자아를 치료하는 쓰디쓴 한 잔의 약.
그러므로 그 의사를 믿으라, 그리고 말없이 고요히 그가 주는 약을 마시라:

왜냐하면, 그의 손 비록 무겁고 딱딱해 보여도 하느님의 부드러운 손길에 인도되고 있으며, 그가 건네는 잔 비록 그대들의 입술을 불타게 할지라도, 그것 역시 도공(陶工)이신 하느님이 자신의 성스러운 눈물로 적신 흙으로 빚은 것이기 때문이니.
